Lesson 4 of 5

Journaling

A journal helps you connect with your motivation, break the cycle of unconscious eating and hold yourself accountable.

Why journal?

A simple habit with a big payoff

Process your emotions

We often overeat because of stress or feelings underneath. Writing helps you face them, instead of reaching for food.

Track what matters

See how your choices affect your health over time, and adjust.

Build “innercise”

Self-reflection builds self-awareness and resilience as you change your diet, supplements and activity.

Research shows that tracking your behaviors and progress builds accountability and makes change more likely. Don’t underestimate it.

What to record

Track these every day

  • Everything you eat, and how much
  • Exercise
  • Sleep
  • Symptoms
  • Weight
  • Waist size
  • Lab results
Be honest. Record everything you eat and drink, and the amounts. Your journal is for you.

Before you eat

Ask yourself four questions

From Julia Cameron, author of The Writing Diet:

  1. Am I truly hungry?
  2. Is this the food I genuinely want to eat?
  3. Is this the right time for me to eat it?
  4. Is there a healthier alternative?

Then go one step deeper:

  1. What emotions am I feeling right now?
  2. What do I truly need in this moment?

Not every feeling needs food as the answer. Be open to other ways of meeting what you need.
